Target Scan is an ultrasound Scan to evaluate location of the baby and baby’s development. Target Scan support us to find certain anomalies. This is also referred as level II Scan, second trimester Scan, mid-trimester Scan or TIFFA Scan. It is like a clinical examination of the fetus, but using ultrasound.

  • This Scan focuses on monitoring the fetus’s physical development, growth as well as to identify any structural (anatomical) abnormality. Target Scan helps obstetrician to assess the growth and the development of the fetus based on accepted metrics and to assess the risk of the pregnancy. Risks are generally classified into two Low-Risk pregnancy & High-risk pregnancy. Normalcy of the developing fetus, structural abnormalities, impaired blood flow and functioning of the heart, are just a few of the findings that one can expect from a target Scan. A Doppler Study is performed to evaluate the blood flow to various parts of the fetus especially the placenta and the brain. Blood flow to other organs may be studied in indicated cases. It is important to remember that majority of babies are normal.

  • Target Scan is usually done between the periods of 18 to 22 weeks of your pregnancy.

  • The specialist performing the ultrasound Scan applies a water based gel over your abdomen or in the region where a specific organ is to be scanned located. Then our expert places a hand-held device named transducer/ probe on that region and moves it around, to detect the images of the organ. In some cases if the images are not clear the expert may repeat the process to acquire clearer image.

  • Our experts’ recommend you to empty your bladder 90 minutes before your examination time. Then consume significant amount of water or milk or coffee about an hour before your examination time. Full bladder is very essential for a pregnancy ultrasound Scan.

Sometimes the mother may be asked to walk around after the initial Scan so that the Fetus may move to a more conducive position suitable for scanning . The mother may also be asked to turn to the left or right for better visibility. However, the time taken for each Scan depends on various factors.

  • This Scan is absolutely safe for both the pregnant woman and for the baby.

  • This Ultrasound imaging method also has certain limitations. Ultrasound cannot accurately diagnose the intestines and parts because the sound waves are obstructed by air and vapours. With ultrasound, the doctor can only see the outer surface of the bone, not the inside of the bone. In addition, ultrasound also limits the survey in overweight and obese people.
