FAQs
  • Fetal therapy includes medical and surgical interventions designed to treat birth defects before a child is born. Some conditions may require medications administered through the mother, while others need complex surgeries to correct abnormalities in the womb.

These procedures demand expert precision and the highest level of care, which is exactly what our specialists at MediScan provide.

  • If routine pregnancy scans such as the First Trimester Scan or Target Scan suggest a possibility of chromosomal abnormalities, further tests like Prenatal Screening and Prenatal Diagnosis are conducted. If abnormalities are detected, fetal therapy may be recommended to improve the baby’s health and quality of life.

  • MediScan offers a comprehensive range of fetal therapy procedures, including:

    • Intrauterine Blood Transfusion
    • Fetoscopic Laser Photocoagulation for Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS)
    • Fetal Shunt Placement
  • This procedure involves injecting red blood cells from a donor into the fetus, typically to treat fetal anemia (low red blood cell count). This ensures that your baby receives the necessary oxygen and nutrients for healthy development.

  • Fetoscopic Laser Photocoagulation is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS), a serious condition that affects identical twins sharing a placenta. In TTTS, abnormal blood vessel connections cause an imbalance in blood flow between the twins, putting both at risk.

During the procedure, a thin camera (fetoscope) is inserted into the womb through a tiny incision. Using laser energy, the abnormal blood vessels connecting the twins are sealed off, restoring a balanced blood flow. This improves the chances of survival and healthy development for both babies.

  • Fetal shunt placement is a procedure used to treat conditions where fluid builds up abnormally in the baby’s body, such as hydrocephalus (fluid in the brain), pleural effusion (fluid around the lungs), or bladder outlet obstruction.

A small tube (shunt) is inserted into the affected area of the fetus using ultrasound guidance. This helps drain excess fluid, relieving pressure and allowing the baby’s organs to develop properly.

The procedure increases the likelihood of a successful pregnancy outcome and reduces complications after birth.

  • Preparing for fetal therapy involves both physical and emotional readiness. Here’s what you can do:

    • Medical Preparation: Your doctor will conduct detailed scans and tests to assess your baby’s condition. Follow their instructions carefully, including any fasting requirements before surgery.
    • Emotional Support: Fetal therapy can be overwhelming. Talk to your doctor about any concerns, join support groups, and lean on family and friends for emotional reassurance.
    • Rest & Nutrition: Ensure you maintain a balanced diet and get adequate rest before the procedure. Your body needs strength for both the therapy and recovery.
    • Hospital Stay: Depending on the procedure, you may need to stay in the hospital for monitoring. Pack essential items and prepare for a short stay.
