Growth Scan
After 28 weeks Scan

Growth Scan helps us to monitor the baby’s health by measuring baby’s weight and various body parts. It also provides information on baby’s position, level of amniotic fluid, maturity of the placenta, position of umbilical cord and complete well-being of the baby as well as the mother. The ultrasound Scan performed around gestational age of 28 to 32 weeks is the Growth Scan.

FAQs
  • This Scan helps us to find the overall wellbeing of the fetus. The size of various organs such as head, abdomen and thigh bone (Femur) are measured and plotted in a graph. The volume of amniotic fluid in which the fetus is surrounded by, is also assessed. This graph is very essential to find the growth of the fetus. The graph indicates if the fetus is a normal, low or high growth foetal baby. This Scan helps the obstetrician to decide on appropriate management of the pregnancy in cases of low or high growth conditions. Additional scans between gestational ages of 34 to 37 weeks may become necessary in case of low or high growth fetus. In some cases a Doppler study may also be required to determine the blood flow to the heart, brain and placenta.

  • The growth of the baby is monitored after 28 weeks. The exact timing of the Scan is decided by the attending obstetrician or after the result of the previous Scan. In “low risk” pregnancies, the Scan may be done between 34-36 weeks and in high risk pregnancies the Scan may be done around 28 weeks and follow up scans thereafter.

  • The specialist performing the ultrasound Scan applies a water based gel over your abdomen or in the region where a specific organ is to be scanned located. Then our expert places a hand-held device named transducer/ probe on that region and moves it around, to detect the images of the organ. In some cases if the images are not clear the expert may repeat the process to acquire clearer image.

  • Our experts’ recommend you to empty your bladder 90 minutes before your examination time. Then consume significant amount of water or milk or coffee about an hour before your examination time. Full bladder is very essential for a pregnancy ultrasound Scan.

  • It takes 20-30 minutes to complete the Scan. In some cases, it might take longer due to the fetal position obscuring certain organs that may not get scanned properly. Where twin or triplet pregnancies are involved, the time taken may be longer and will require additional scans frequently, either weekly or fortnightly.

  • This Scan is absolutely safe for both the pregnant woman and for the baby.

  • This Ultrasound imaging method also has certain limitations. Ultrasound cannot accurately diagnose the intestines and parts because the sound waves are obstructed by air and vapours. With ultrasound, the doctor can only see the outer surface of the bone, not the inside of the bone. In addition, ultrasound also limits the survey in overweight and obese people.
