After getting a FibroScan test at your diagnostic center, the next question you probably have is:
“What do my CAP and liver stiffness scores mean?”
At MediScan Systems, Chennai, we provide FibroScan reports with two critical values:
These values help assess the level of fat and scarring (fibrosis) in your liver. Let’s break them down in simple terms so you can understand what your report is telling you.
CAP (Controlled Attenuation Parameter) measures the amount of fat in your liver.
It is shown in decibels per meter (dB/m).
CAP Score Interpretation:
| CAP Score (dB/m) | Liver Fat Level | Steatosis Grade |
|---|---|---|
| < 238 | Normal | S0 |
| 238–259 | Mild Fat Accumulation | S1 |
| 260–290 | Moderate Fatty Liver | S2 |
| > 290 | Severe Fatty Liver | S3 |
A score above 260 dB/m usually indicates NAFLD (Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease) and may require medical attention and lifestyle changes.
Liver stiffness reflects the level of fibrosis or scarring in the liver.
It is shown in kilopascals (kPa) and graded using the METAVIR scale (F0–F4).
Liver Stiffness Score & METAVIR Interpretation:
| kPa Score | Fibrosis Stage | METAVIR Grade | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| < 5.5 | No fibrosis | F0 | Healthy liver |
| 5.5–7.0 | Mild fibrosis | F1 | Early scarring |
| 7.1–9.5 | Moderate fibrosis | F2 | Some damage, still reversible |
| 9.6–12.5 | Severe fibrosis | F3 | Significant scarring |
| > 12.5 | Cirrhosis | F4 | Permanent damage, needs attention |
High liver stiffness doesn’t always mean cirrhosis — inflammation or congestion can temporarily raise scores.
